Good morning everyone, and welcome to this week’s Poetry Corner featuring Lauren Mitchell!
Lauren Mitchell is an award-winning writer, performance poet, and public speaker based out of the greater D.C. area. She is #MissPiedmontRegion 2016 and 2nd RU @ #MissVirginia, the first contestant to perform slam poetry in the talent competition.
As an artist, Mitchell strives to see beauty in the smallest things, critique society sincerely and honestly, and cultivate unity where there is division and controversy. Routinely speaking to audiences of hundreds (whether at speech competitions, poetry slams, or talent showcases), Mitchell uses her original work of poetry to inspire, motivate, and empower youth to rise above their circumstances.
Mitchell has ranked among the top five youth speakers in the country. She is a high school national moot court champion, holds multiple titles from Ivy League speech competitions, and formerly represented the U.S.A. at the Collegiate World Debate Championships in Chennai, India. Mitchell is also a coach for high school and collegiate debate teams, and is currently a student leader at Patrick Henry College.
Mitchell’s poetry routinely ends up “trending” on popular sites such as Tumblr and Facebook, with her quotes generating thousands of shares. Her goal is to uplift, inspire, and remind people that life is filled with 2nd chances.
Lauren is also donating 100% of the proceeds from her new upcoming poetry book to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Please check out her website here for more info.
