First, I have to apologize for not posting a story yesterday. I got my days mixed up, so, here’s a two-for-one special. 🙂
Stanley straightened his suit as he looked into the mirror. Everything had to be perfect. He couldn’t relax now.
Satisfied, he headed for the door. If he succeeded today, he’d be on easy street for the rest of his days.
He came to a stop at seeing the car. The old rust bucket, as he called it, had been his father’s. It was also the only thing his wife had left following their divorce, despite her cheating on him.
Getting in, he stroked the steering wheel. “Ready for one more deal?”
A muffled cry came from the trunk.
The pick drove into the ground again and again as Maria worked to loosen the earth. It was a task she had decided on when he husband, Isaiah, had fallen sick the day before.
She wasn’t a stranger to hard work, as life in the middle of nowhere demanded it, so she thought it best if she helped dig the outhouse.
In a way, it helped relax her. Out here, she felt alive. Let the others have their colonies. She wanted the untamed wilderness.
Isiah would be better in a couple of days. Until then, it was up to her.
